The animation is not only popular in Japan, but also has a high international reputation, especially in Asia. Ikkyu is based on Ikkyu Sojun, a Zen monk from Japan's Muromachi period who was famous for his poetry and wit, and the anime Ikkyu retains these historical traits to a large extent.
